What Is IFS Therapy

IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy helps you understand and connect with the different parts of yourself - such as the anxious part, the critical voice, the part that shuts down, and the part that wants to heal.

Instead of judging or trying to “fix” these parts, IFS encourages curiosity and compassion. The focus is on building a relationship with each part so you can better understand why it exists and what it needs.

IFS therapy in Minneapolis follows this same core approach, offering a supportive space where you can explore your inner world safely and openly.

In sessions, the goal is not to force change or eliminate parts of yourself. Instead, it is about getting to know them. As protective parts begin to feel heard and understood, many people experience:

  • A greater sense of calm
  • Increased confidence
  • More emotional balance in everyday life

The Core of IFS: Your Deeper Self

At the heart of IFS therapy is the idea of your Deeper Self - the grounded, wise, and compassionate core within you.

Therapy helps you access this inner presence, allowing healing to happen at a deeper level - not just relieving symptoms temporarily, but addressing their root.

3 Main “Parts” of IFS

Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps you heal by understanding the different “parts” within you.

01

Managers

The underlying goal of the manager is to protect the self from harm by any means necessary, including unhealthy ways of protecting, like letting the self get too close to people or over-performing to the point of perfectionism and burnout.

02

Exiles

These are parts of your personality that have been shut away out of pain, fear, shame, or guilt. The Manager works to actively suppress the exile, and it can be painful to think or experience the exile. Exiles are often a result of trauma or childhood experiences.

03

Firefighters

When the exiles do get out and release all their pent-up trauma, anxiety, depression, shame, and guilt, the Firefighters role is to contain the trauma and "douse the flames" as quickly as possible. This could be through substance abuse, self-harm, or dissociation, to name a few examples.

I’m a regular guy: a husband, dad, and board game enthusiast. The reason I love this work is because of how much it has helped me personally. I used to feel lost in anxiety and depression, and now I have access to deep calm, confidence, and a steady sense that “I am okay.” The amazing thing is that these same qualities are already within you.

“Healing begins when we turn toward ourselves with curiosity and compassion. When your inner world feels safer, your life begins to feel clearer, steadier, and more whole.”
— Corey Busch, LMFT

The reason you may not experience them right now is that they’re often covered up. I can help you practice a method that has helped me and hundreds of people I’ve worked with uncover the calm and confidence already within them, and heal the root causes of their symptoms. This method is called IFS.

Corey is a therapist who pairs heart with head, providing a safe, caring presence with competent and innovative practice. As a therapist myself, Corey is at the top of my referral list. He has been a valued and trustworthy colleague for nearly a decade. If a meta-goal of therapy is to not only address problems, but learn to elicit and maintain access to our core self as a source of healing and wisdom, then Corey embodies that practice and creates space for others to as well.
